HMS Sheffield, a Town Class Cruiser of the Royal Navy, wearing dazzle camouflage. A regular on the Arctic run, she was in dock receiving repairs during PQ17. Nicknamed the Shiny Sheff (her fittings were stainless steel instead of brass), she took part in the Battle of the North Cape in December 1943, which saw the Scharnhorst sunk. This, together with the X-craft and bomber actions that crippled and then sunk the Tirpitz, effectively ended the threat to the convoys from German surface ships.
